Collection includes: business records and correspondence generated during Macdonald's tenure as medical superintendent of the New York City Asylum for the Insane, Ward's Island (later renamed the Manhattan State Hospital East), and general superintendent of the New York City Asylums; various printed material, including annual reports, journal reprints and meeting minutes; and other professional material, including legal briefs, testimony, court orders and correspondence for a number of cases, as well as documentation pertaining to Macdonald's organizational memberships and conference attendance. Also includes newspaper clippings, bound diaries and notebooks, along with numerous manuscripts and typescripts of papers and lectures on a variety of medical topics. Marriage and citizenship papers; diplomas; and photographs are also included.
